The first fixture of the 2024 season saw the Berkshire team travel to Reigate Hill for the match against Surrey. For once traffic on all the motorways was moving well and everyone arrived earlier than expected in good time to enjoy a coffee before the pre-game sandwiches.

The course was undoubtedly challenging with some quite steep hills and undulations which continued onto the large and lightning-fast greens making for a tricky but very enjoyable afternoon! We were lucky to play in mostly dry conditions but there was a bitterly cold wind and it felt much more like winter than spring.

Everyone enjoyed their matches which were all played in good spirits. The majority were very close with 5 out of 8 games being decided on the 18th green. Surrey eventually won the match with a 4 ½ – 3 ½ victory. A very commendable result for Berkshire since none of us had played the course before.

Sussex Lady Captains Society is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and their Captain presented us all with a pen as a memento. As it was also both the birth & death date of Shakespeare, she very cleverly included the title of many of his plays in her speech after the meal which could only be described as memorable!

Result – 3 ½ – 4 ½
